Video - DVD and Video Reviews
Combative Conditioning from Impact Jujitsu
Two DVD'S and a CD-ROM movement library on training for Brazilian Jujitsu and Mixed martial arts. Good resource for MMA trainers and fighters. Good sound periodisation principles, yet easy to follow. Lots of good sport specific touches, comprehensive demonstrations of all the techniques and bail points for every exercise to help you do them right. The program is dependent on bands, however there are numerous alternatives suggested on the CD-ROM and a bonus outdoor training feature on the DVD. Suspect camera work but good resource for fighters.
Resilient from Dragondoor
Prehab DVD with techniques to stabilise and improve ROM in knees, shoulders, elbows, neck and more. Most techniques require a kettlebell or no equipment at all. A dumbbell would do in most cases and these techniques would benefit just about everybody. Some great drills from boxing, martial arts and even ice hockey. For a healthy back, free moving scapulae and a strong jaw that will help you keep your teeth after a punch, it's worth a look. Well presented.
Martial Power: Hard Hitting Combat Secrets from the Russian Special Ops from Dragondoor
This set of DVDs sounds like the kind of thing that would come with a free comic book, botle of vodka or genuine spestnaz commando knife. However this is a brilliant resource for martial artists. It has some great mobiltiy drills, joint cushioning techniques and strength drills, as well as a whole arsenal of techniques to help you increase your power, in a variety of strikes, by generating more force from the ground, integrating more muscle groups into a strike, hitting with the optimal intensity, taking advantage of Okinawan karate breathing techniques and some other tricks as well. Most of the techniques are circular strikes, so if you study a more linear discipline like wing chun, this may not be as useful. There are other applications as well, for instance in grappling and bayonet thrusts. Obviously you can't be expected to replicate what you see in the DVDs instantly. A concerted effort would be needed to break these drills down into simple components and then replicate them in the desired strike. The DVD illustrates how to do this more than adequately and is concisely and clearly presented despite shocking camera work. Many of the breathing and muscular irradiation techniques can also be applied to weight lifting. However if that is your main interest you'd be better buying one of the many books which deal with this on www.dragondoor.com. As there is an emphasis on muscular tension for most of these techniques, martial artists will have to make a concerted effort to stay more loose than normal. As these drills require very little equipment they can be introduced to classes or simply done at home, if you have a heavy bag. A good resource for fighters and instructors alike.
